Eau de toilette or eau de parfum, fresh or woody notes…

Our tips for choosing a fragrance to wear or give as a gift.

Sparkling bergamot, lavender that brings to mind the paths of Provence, the warmth of a woody accord… A fragrance accompanies everyday moments and can leave a lasting impression long after someone has gone.

Whether choosing a personal treat or a gift, finding a men’s fragrance often raises the same questions: which scent should you go for? Eau de toilette or eau de parfum? How do you make the right choice?

From sparkling citrus to woody accords, here are a few pointers to help you find a fragrance that suits the tastes and lifestyle of the person who will wear it.

Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum: What’s the Difference?

These terms indicate the concentration of the fragrance composition. Eau de parfum is generally more concentrated than eau de toilette, although concentrations vary between fragrances and brands.

Eau de Toilette: Often a Lighter Presence

For someone who enjoys freshness and a relatively light fragrance, eau de toilette can be a lovely option to explore for everyday wear.

It is not limited to citrus scents: an eau de toilette can also reveal woody, aromatic or ambery notes. Its character depends on the composition as a whole.

Eau de Parfum: Often a More Pronounced Signature

Eau de parfum often appeals to those looking for a more noticeable fragrance and longer wear. It can suit an evening out, a special occasion or everyday life, with the amount applied adjusted accordingly.

However, an eau de parfum is not automatically the better choice. Longevity, perceived intensity and sillage — the scent trail a fragrance leaves behind — do not depend on concentration alone.

Another useful detail: when a fragrance comes in both eau de toilette and eau de parfum versions, the two may feature different notes. It is therefore worth discovering each one.

Which Scent Should You Choose in a Men’s Fragrance?

Before focusing on a name or bottle, start with the scents enjoyed by the person who will wear the fragrance.

Citrus zest, a walk in the woods, herbs crushed between the fingers… When choosing for yourself, these memories offer valuable clues. For a gift, fragrances the person already wears are a good starting point.

Fresh and Citrus Notes

Bergamot, lemon, grapefruit… Citrus notes evoke the sparkling freshness of fruit peel. A scent profile worth exploring for anyone who enjoys bright, lively fragrances.

Eau du Ventoux Sport features mint, bergamot and grapefruit in its top notes, followed by lavender and geranium at its heart. The base combines cedar, sandalwood, musk and amber.

       Aromatic                     Notes

Lavender, tarragon, herbal accords… Aromatic fragrances evoke a green freshness, sometimes more herbaceous than citrus scents.

Eau du Ventoux combines bergamot and tarragon with base notes of cedar, sandalwood and musk. An option to discover for those who enjoy the meeting of green and woody notes.

           Woody             Notes

Cedar, sandalwood, vetiver… Depending on the accords, woody notes can evoke dry wood, creamy softness or earthier nuances.

Eau du Ventoux Vétiver opens with bergamot and grapefruit. Its heart combines lavender, geranium and tonka bean, followed by a base of vetiver, sandalwood, cedar and musk.

Spicy and Ambery Accords

For someone who enjoys warm fragrances with depth and character, spicy or ambery compositions are well worth exploring.

Cèdre Bleu Eau de Parfum features cinnamon in its top notes, cedar and black pepper at its heart, followed by musk, sandalwood and amber in the base.

Another option, Ventoux Black in 30 ml, combines lemon and bergamot in its top notes, patchouli and deep woody accords at its heart, then amber and musk in the base.

These fragrance families are starting points. A single fragrance can blend freshness, woods and spices: the preferences of the person wearing it remain the best guide.

How Should You Test a Fragrance to Find the Right One?

Discover the Scents in Our Shops

Do you live near one of our shops, or are you visiting Provence? Take the opportunity to discover the fragrances and narrow down your choice. Find the addresses on our shops page to plan your visit.

Whether choosing for yourself or buying a gift, smelling fragrances helps you appreciate their nuances. And if the person you are buying for comes along, the experience can become a lovely moment to share.

Start with Two or Three Fragrances

A small selection makes comparison easier. Begin with fragrance blotters to explore the compositions. When choosing for yourself, then try your favourite on your skin, following the product’s directions and precautions.

When choosing a gift, testing a fragrance on your own skin will give you an idea of its scent, but will not tell you exactly how it will smell on the person who will wear it.

Avoid applying several fragrances to the same spot, as this can blur their individual nuances.

If you are buying online, compare the fragrance pyramid — its top, heart and base notes — with those of the recipient’s favourite fragrances, or your own. Folies de Provence offers smaller sizes. As well as being convenient to carry, they can make it easier to discover a fragrance before choosing a larger bottle.

Giving a Men’s Fragrance as a Gift: What Clues Should You Look For?

The best starting point is the fragrance the person already wears. Do they prefer fresh scents, woody notes or softer accords? Do they always return to the same fragrance, or do they enjoy trying something different?

If you are unsure, ask a few questions in conversation or suggest choosing together. A fresh fragrance will not necessarily appeal to everyone: no scent is universally loved.

The right fragrance is one that the wearer enjoys smelling on their skin. Whether choosing for yourself or giving a gift, taking the time to explore scents and understand the wearer’s preferences remains the best way to refine your choice.
